About a month or two ago, our A/C guy came to do his biannual magic to keep our units running at peak performance.
I call him the HVAC wizard…without the wand and robe.
When he finished, everything was fine, but there was one little problem: we only had filters for one of the units. We were out for the other one.
“No big deal,” I thought. My wife ordered new filters right away. They arrived the next day, she set the box neatly in the garage…
…and there they sat.
And sat.
Like a box of good intentions just waiting to be opened.
Meanwhile, life got busy: homeschool, my daughter’s play, wedding plans, you know how life goes sometimes.
Two months later Ali started noticing the air didn’t feel as fresh.
I don’t know how she picks up on stuff like this, but my wife has the nose of a bloodhound and can probably detect an air quality problem before the A/C unit itself even knows what’s happening.
She mentioned the house was feeling stale, and she wasn’t feeling her best as she had a little tickle in her throat. She brought it up a few times, and each time I thought,
“Yep, we really need to get that filter swapped out soon.”
But we didn’t.
So about an hour ago, I finally said to my son, “Dallas, we got to get this air filter changed out, and we have to do it yesterday.”
We pulled down the ladder, popped open the vent, and changed out the old filter.
Let’s just say it did not look pretty. Imagine doing a few dozen loads of laundry and never once cleaning the lint screen. It literally looked like a dust bunny retirement village.
And then came the best part.
On the side of the filter, in big letters, someone had written: “Dallas, please change me.”
To this day, we have no idea who wrote it. His brother? The A/C guy? Some attic ghost with a sense of humor? A desperate plea from the filter itself?
Whoever it was, the message was shouting loud and clear, and we walked by it for weeks, ignoring it like it was a piece of junk mail.
Here’s the kicker:
It took 5–10 minutes to change it. That’s it.
We slid the new filter in and boom…instant improvement. The airflow picked up, the house felt cleaner, the A/C unit ran more efficiently, and I no longer had that nagging procrastination guilt hanging over me.
The system didn’t need a miracle… it just needed us to finally do the obvious thing.
Isn’t that exactly what happens with our health?
We know something needs maintenance, fixing, or attention, but we put it off…
until the “air gets stale” and we’re basically choking on our own dust (figuratively, of course).
Your body leaves little reminders, too:
- Tightness/stiffness
- Fatigue
- Pain
- Brain Fog
- That annoying ache that only shows up when you’re trying to sleep
These are your body’s version of “Dallas, please change me.”
The signs are usually pretty clear. The problem is, just like that filter, we walk past them every day thinking,
“Yeah, I’ll get to it soon.”
But after 32 years of fixing problems, I can tell you for sure that maintenance is faster, easier, and cheaper than repair. Always.
It took us 5 minutes to fix something we’d ignored for weeks.
And just like that, the system and our family breathed easier.
Here’s the Bottom Line:
Don’t wait until things get stale, clogged, or uncomfortable before making a change.
Whether it’s your spine, your posture, your stress levels, or your energy, if your body’s been sending you a message, this is your friendly nudge to actually listen.
Take care of it now, and you’ll breathe a whole lot easier later.
Have a GREAT Saturday!
