A Wedding in California…and a Football game back Home

Two weeks ago today, we celebrated my oldest son’s wedding in California. It was one of those weekends our family will be talking about for years.

I spent two weeks out there, and the rest of my family is still enjoying California before heading home this upcoming week.

It had been quite a while since we’d been back, but something interesting happened when we arrived. It felt like we had never left. Many of the same places were still there, and everywhere we went we ran into friends and people we’ve known for years. It reminded us just how deeply connected we once were to that community.

The wedding itself was everything we hoped it would be.

Leading up to the big day were family dinners, get-togethers, a special wedding charge night for my son, the rehearsal dinner, and countless conversations with family and friends we hadn’t seen in years. Each event seemed to build naturally into the next until the wedding day finally arrived.

As a parent, there are a handful of moments you know will stay with you for the rest of your life. Watching my son get married is now one of them. Seeing the joy between him and his bride brought a deep sense of peace and gratitude as they began this new chapter together.

As I reflected on the trip, I realized something.

The memories weren’t made because of the venue, the lamb chop appetizers, the steak and sea bass dinner, the gourmet gluten-free donuts and homemade ice cream cart, or even the perfect California weather.

All of that was incredible, but it wasn’t the source of the memories.

The real reason the memories were made was because people were able to be there.

They walked through airports, they stood through long ceremonies, they hugged old friends, they danced, they laughed, they stayed up late talking, they traveled hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles just to be together and celebrate.

Today, my second-born son turned 28 years old. To celebrate, he wanted to play a football game this morning. I found myself out there with about a dozen guys in their late teens and 20’s, along with another dad who is 45.

It turned into another one of those unexpected but meaningful moments.

And afterward, I came to the profound realization that whether you’re showing up to a wedding 3,000 miles away or sprinting on a football field for two hours with a group of younger guys, none of it is possible without the God-given gift of good health.

We’re given this body as a gift, and as stewards of it, we get to take care of it, because when we don’t, we slowly lose the ability to participate in the moments that matter most.

That’s really what health comes down to.

Not perfection. Not extreme fitness. Just the ability to show up and stay engaged in life.

Here are three simple, practical ways to start taking better care of your health so you can keep showing up for the moments that matter:

1. Move every day, even if it’s simple.

You don’t need a perfect workout. Walk, stretch, play with your kids or grandkids, get outside, or take 10-15 minutes to keep your joints moving. Consistency matters more than intensity. Motion keeps you in the game.

2. Prioritize recovery as much as activity.

Most people think health is about what they do when they’re “on.” But real progress happens when you recover: sleep, hydration, and giving your body what it needs to repair.

3. Protect the basics: hydration, food, and inflammation.

Drink enough water throughout the day, especially in the Florida heat. Focus on real, whole foods most of the time and minimize the things that quietly work against you like excess sugar, ultra-processed foods, and constant snacking. Small daily choices compound more than most people realize.

The goal isn’t to become extreme, but to stay available. Available for weddings, for trips, for games with your kids or grandkids, or how about the moments you can’t get back.

Because at the end of the day, good health doesn’t just add years to your life…

It keeps life in your years.
